As spring gives way to summer, and the weather starts to improve, our Gardens at both HMP Send and HMP Erlestoke have started to show us the fruits of our students’ hard work.
Our students have been working hard in all weathers to ensure a decent crop of fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs for the summer. One specific project that the students are working on is growing chillies to eventually produce a range of chilli chutneys and sauces. Our students are actively engaged with taking responsibility for all parts; ensuring the watering and de-weeding jobs are done and they have transferred all the seedlings to larger pots to be looked after more carefully in the warmer weather.
In the past month, two more students have successfully achieved their horticulture qualifications and three students who will graduate from the Gardens in the next few weeks have been offered extra help to develop their skills in floristry and gardening upon their release.
In Erlestoke, the students have begun working on a new design of beds and borders in preparation for the summer. The theme they are working on this year is surfing; they’ve padded out a pair of denim jeans with paper, planted them with flowers and will mount them on a bespoke surfboard. This will be the centre piece of one of the borders with the surfboard riding a wave of flowers.
